The coat of arms depicts the papal tiara and the two crossed keys – one gold and one silver – traditional symbols of the Holy See, placed behind the personal heraldic shield.
The shield is divided diagonally into two fields:
Upper blue field, with a silver lily, a symbol of purity and Marian devotion.
Lower silver field, with a burning heart crowned with thorns placed above an open book, an emblem of living faith and the Word of God.
Below the shield is a white ribbon with the Latin motto “IN ILLO UNO UNUM”, which means “In the Only One, we are one” — a call to unity in faith and in Christ.
The crossed pontifical keys, joined by a red cord, represent the spiritual power (gold key) and the earthly power (silver key) entrusted to Saint Peter. The triple-crowned tiara above the shield symbolizes the Pope’s authority and his threefold mission: to sanctify, govern, and teach.
